April 29th 2015. 30 miles. Cycle

Today was supposed to be my second last long run before the marathon. So again while the enforced knee rest continues, I decided to do a long cycle instead. What I had not factored in was that the entire rainfall for April was going to come out of the sky during the 3 hours I was out. Soaking aside, the first half was very nice. Once again I saw a plethora of birds, and had a heron flying alongside me for a spell. I congratulated myself that I had chosen not to just sit on a bicycle machine at the…

April 26th 2015. 13.4 miles. Cycle

It’s been a difficult week at work this week. Lost a very dear patient and have a couple more who are struggling. But if nothing else, it reminds me why I’m doing this. Harping on about my sore knee is somewhat put into perspective I think. After watching the kids at park run this morning, then Paula Radcliffe finishing the London Marathon (sobbed) I was desperate to get out running today but need to keep aforementioned knee rested for the time being. So took to my bike and cycled a route that I’ve often run. And it seems that cycling…

April 22nd 2015. 0 miles. Pimms

Well it’s amazing all the things you can do on your day off when you don’t need to go for a three hour run. After putting my knee out on Sunday in Edinburgh I am going to have to not run for a week or two. After dropping the kids at school I took Lola for a lovely walk around Kilmardinny Loch, then did some gardening before heading over to the south side for lunch and a great catch up with my friend Cicely, and possibly the world’s happiest baby Felicity.  Then home to sit in the garden drinking Pimms…

April 19th 2015. 10 miles. Edinburgh

Well bugger me but Edinburgh is hilly. Travelled through last night to stay with my cousin Lyndsay (pictured) who ran with me today. Lovely scenic route through Edinburgh but it seemed that the entire run was uphill (and they were steep!). Also running with us was Lyndsay’s brother-in-law Ewan, and a few previous blog guests were there too – Ewan, Jeff and Vanessa. After we had finished, the kids took part in the junior races. Uncle Ewan terribly kindly became Holly’s ‘accompanying adult’ in her mini (1.5k) race as my pesky knee (only just been injected) was playing up again,…

April 18th 2015. 3.1 miles. Family

Needed to do a short run today but Paul on call so took Jamie, Holly and Lola with me up to the reservoir. Jamie and I ran, Holly cycled and Lola bounded. It was a beautiful day and a really lovely run. It struck me while going round that over this last year I have dragged my family all over the place, often at ridiculous hours of the day, often making them run, or just stand in the rain for hours waiting for me, and they have done this almost without a word of complaint. They have been such a…

April 15th 2015. 16.3 miles. Birds

Another longy today. Back along the canal to Torrance. Today I saw lots of wild birds. Apart from the usual ducks/pigeons/robins etc that you always see, I saw two herons (one was right beside me but flew to the other side of the canal before I managed to get a picture of it), a couple of goldfinches and would you believe Kali and Lindsay I saw your two parakeets!! They were too fast flying to get a picture but bright green and definitely there. If I’m honest I didn’t 100% believe you saw them but there they were. Wild parakeets…

April 11th 2015. 6.3 miles. Seaton

Back along the nature trail today with David (he might even be starting to enjoy it). But after a big curry (with rather a lot of wine) last night, followed by a huge lunch just before setting off today (what were we thinking) it was much more of a struggle. Nearly had to hide behind bush at one point (Ewan – you have mentioned this previously- never happened to me before). Made it back just on time to see all of our (8) horses not win the Grand National and then had a lovely evening with our new Cornish friends…

April 8th 2015. 14.3 miles. Padstow

Another beautiful day in Cornwall. Today I was dropped in a place called Hellandbridge, north of Bodmin where I joined the Camel Trail (follows the Camel River) and ran to lovely Padstow, where the rest of the family had cycled to. It was very hot but nice and flat and I was rewarded with some Rick Stein fish and chips followed by Cornish ice cream at the end. Really scenic route along what I think was once an old railway line. Think it was quite useful to run in the heat because Edinburgh could potentially be very hot at the…

April 5th 2015. 6.2 miles. David

We are in Cornwall for our holidays and what a lovely place to be.  The weather has turned from winter to nearly summer and this morning my brother in law David (not entirely voluntarily), and Jamie, came for run with me. David has run half marathons in the past but not for years, and Jamie has never run further than 5km, but we managed 10km which was magic. Happy Easter everyone x
